Mission Knocks Off Lowell...Still Chasing Playoffs
(11-07) 07:55 PST -- The Mission High football team packed a game's worth of great plays into 37 seconds Thursday afternoon, but it was a stubborn defense that secured a 20-14 win over host Lowell.
Mission (6-3, 3-2), which stayed alive in the AAA playoff race, didn't allow a point in the second half and stopped a prolonged Lowell drive (84 yards, 11 minutes) on a 4th-and-1 at the 6-yard line with 3:27 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Neither team scored in the second half, but Mission went to the express window for points at the end of the first half.
After Lowell (4-4, 3-2) turned the ball over on downs on the 28-yard line while leading 14-6 with 37 seconds remaining in the second quarter, David Milburn hit James Amerson over the middle for a 52-yard gain. Amerson reversed field twice on the play as 22 seconds went off the clock.
Milburn (9-for-19, 129 yards), a sophomore making his first start, hit Demaree Hampton for a 10-yard touchdown with 2.7 seconds remaining to trim Lowell's lead to 14-12. On the ensuing kickoff, Lowell fumbled the return. Hampton picked it up and sprinted 42 yards for the game-winning touchdown, and Mission added a two-point conversion
Hampton also scored on a 3-yard run for the Bears, who finished with 179 total yards.
Lowell, which had 287 total yards and took a 14-6 lead with 8:37 remaining in the first half, was led by running backs Wang Han (97 yards, one touchdown) and Nathaniel Banks (62 yards).
